I love it when people visit my blog, and I especially love it when people think enough about what I have written or posted to leave behind a comment. All comments, however, are not created equal. After blogging for more than three years, I have had my fair share of inapproriate, rude and/or generally insensitive comments. So, I have decided to to develop a Blog EULA for “One Thing I Know” and its sister blogs.
Before posting a comment ask yourself the following questions:
- Will my comment further the discussion of the topic at hand? If the answer is “yes,” proceed to the next question. If the answer is “no.” then go to number 2 below
- Is my comment appropriate to post on this blog? If the answer is “yes,” proceed to the next question.  If the answer is “no,” then go to number 2 below.
- Is what I am going to say rude or insensitive to the writer and/or the readers of this blog? If the answer is “yes,” then proceed to number 1 below . If the answer is “no,” then go to number 2 below.
- Please feel free to comment. I would love to hear from you and dialogue with you on the topic at hand. It is a pleasure to have readers such as yourself and I look forward to getting to know you better.
- DO NOT LEAVE A COMMENT. I really don’t care to hear from you, and neither do my readers. This is especially true if your comment would be considered rude, insensitive, or offensive. Comments of this nature may not even see the light of day on this blog, and if they do, they will only be shown so that I can point out to others who read them what a jerk you are (see my comment here as an example of this).
I realize that some may believe this policy smacks of censorship, and to those who so believe I say, “So be it.” This is my blog. I pay the hosting fees for it - you don’t. I, therefore, am the sole arbiter of what appears on its posts and page - not you. In this one small space of the universe, I am in control and freedom of speech is not a guaranteed right.
If this policy is not to you liking, too bad. Go get your own blog (free ones are available at wordpress.com or blogspot.com, or if you want to put your money where your mouth is, go pay for a decent hosting service). There you can post whatever content you want to your heart’s content, and there you can deal with commenters like yourself as well. Good luck with them, by the way.
Please note that this policy really does not apply to 99.99% of those who would leave a comment here. It is only for those who, for the lack of a better word, are a**holes.
