Blue Like Jazz: The Movie?

My Opinion on this idea can be summed up in one word repeated over and over again:  NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO,  NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO . . .

NO, just read the book, please . . . The world does not need another lame “Christian” movie, even if, especially if, it is based on a great book sure to be ruined by the transition to film. Make another Left Behind movie, but don’t ruin this great book.

Here is the news as reported by Greg Horton on his blog:

Yes, it’s gonna be a movie. Here’s a story that includes an interview with Donald Miller and Steve Taylor. According to the interview, Miller will have a cameo as the “trendy writer” character from the book. No decision has been made on actors yet, but I can’t wait to see who plays Driscoll. Steve Taylor, whose claim to fame as a filmmaker was the 2006 stunner The Second Chance featuring the magnetic Michael W. Smith, will direct. Miller is honest enough to say that he believes the movie will appeal primarily to Christians. Taylor is more hopeful. I’m thinking it’s going to appeal to a subset of Christians–those who are weary of megachurches but still think evangelical theology has the answers.

Driscoll? He’s not even in the book.

I think he has his “cussing” pastors mixed up.

Do I? I thought the cussing pastor was Driscoll. Who is it?

  4. greg wrote,

    Hey,

I did some googling. Every search result I found indicated Driscoll is the cussing pastor. Y’all know something the rest of the online world doesn’t?

Personally, I don’t know. I will have to check the book again to see. . . I think it might be Pastor Rick at Imago Dei. I’ll let you know if I figure it out.

Here’s a quote from the book itself to clear this up:

Even though Mark said cusswords, he was telling a lot of people about Jesus, and he was being socially active…About the time I was praying that God would help me find a church, I got a call from Mark, the cussing pastor, and he said he had a friend who was moving to Portland to start a church and that I should join him. Rick and I got together over coffee. I thought he was hilarious…He said a few cusswords but not as bad as Mark.*

If it is half as good as Steve Taylor’s last movie, Second Chance, then it will be great. The world needs more Christian movies as good as that. Left Behind they ain’t.
