It is now after 12 Midnight (notice I did not write 12am, since I do not believe 12 am or 12 pm actually exist), and I have been awake since around 6:30 am on Saturday morning. . . a total of 41.5 hours so far. Other than a few yawns, I have had no adverse effects, and I will probably make it to 43 hours before retiring for the night.
I really don’t know why I do this other than the fact that I can. I find myself staying awake all night on average about once a week . . .for no good reason. I have had a lot on my mind lately, and there is much to do before I leave home Tuesday for a week away. But this is not always the case when I pull these meaningless all-nighters.
Since my days in college (a lifetime ago) I have been doing this. Of course then it was the way I got my homework finished, wrote my term papers, and crammed for my exams. Now it is how I write my sermons, get my reading (for pleasure and study) done, have the time to watch my favorite TV shows, as well as spend too much time on my computer. Some habits are tenacious it would seem.
And then on top of the joy that comes with my evening multitasking (which I am doing even as I type), I find that I resent the time wasted by sleeping. There is too much to do to spend one-third of one’s life in bed. So I stay awake as long as I can each night, occasionally crashing for 10-12 hours when the fatigue gets to be too much. I may be reaching that point right now. Ever since I typed the word “yawn,” that is all I have been doing. Time to close my notebook and my eyes for awhile. So here goes . . .good night.
