Was Steve Irwin a Christian?

Since my post on Steve Irwin’s death and our human tendency towards voyeurism, I have been getting a lots of hits on this blog from folks who have googled something along the lines of “Steve Irwin Christian?” or “Was Steve Irwin Christian.” This has happened on the average of 2 or 3 times each day.

A look at the Blogflux statistics of another blogger confirms that this has been a widespread phenomenon, as this graph and stats show:

I have no idea why the eternal fate of one person’s soul has so intrigued so many people, but let me give you my answer to the question that seems to be out there.

Was Steve Irwin a Christian?

I have no idea, and neither does anyone else. In fact, the only being who does know is God, and as far as I know, God has given no definite indication of Irwin’s fate to anyone. To this I would simply add the following:

pray for Irwin’s family and friends in their time of grief, and if it is part of your religious tradition, pray for Steve as well.

There is an email going around that he became a Christian two weeks before his death. I got this email and investigated the claim - take a look at the results: Steve Irwin a Christian? & Steve Irwin a Christian (Pt II)?

There is some evidence, which I’ve listed here (only to show how it’s not definitive evidence). Also, follow the links in one of the comments to a hoax about Irwin. Someone’s been spreading rumors that he went forward at an altar call 2.5 weeks before he died. The mistake of the rumor-mongerers was to name the church. The pastor of that church has refuted the myth by saying it never happened.

Everyone is interested in Steve Irwin; most of the people who’ve discovered my blog through search engines came through searches for Steve Irwin. Steve was a great human being, and his passing is a loss for us all; the world is smaller without him. But the ongoing curiosity, particularly searches for the video of his death, is rather morbid, I agree.

I think he was a Christian because of the way he respects and cares for all God has made including us.
